I am looking at getting a duel opteron 244 system with Tyan Thunder mb for a sever. What linux distro it good for 64 bit processor?

the linux kernel is the same (except for any vendor-patches) in all distros - maybe the version they use varies, so it doesn't make any difference. as long as you compile smp support into the kernel, it will work.

btw- it is dual, not duel. duel = like a sword fight. dual = 2.

I think Hayl was asking about the pre-compiled apps. As I don't have an Opteron I don't know. My suggestion is to look at the major distros and see who is offering Opteron support. Then work from there. I enjoy Slackware for my desktop, but as I said earlier, not sure if they make an Opteron port.

Nathan.

I'd look into Gentoo. I know they have a 64-bit version for SUN architecture.

Suse or Debian are the other options I'd check out.
