I installed Netscape 6, everything went extremely well.. software is alright, but a little slow.. I decided to restart the machine a few days latar and now, when it tries to start X Windows for the login..the monitor flickers every 2 seconds like it is trying desparately to negotiate a new resolution setting. Eventually, the machine hangs. I am sometimes able to get to a text based tty and login / shutdown.. Everything before the restart worked fine.
Two questions ?
- Can I stop X windows from loading , or
- Can I get into the config using a Linux boot disk or CD ROM ?
Thanks..

At the lilo prompt if I recall correctly you can type "linux one" or "linux single" which will take you to a command line and allow you to fix stuff. You can then take a look at your X config file and lower the default resolution or whatever you need to do to solve the problem. I can't see how netscape could of caused this problem but you might try mozilla since it's better:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.5
If you don't want X to automatically start you can go to /etc/inittab and at the top of the file it will have this line:
id:5:initdefault:
just change the 5 to a 3 and next time you boot you will get a prompt instead of going straight to X.

Thanks for the tips... I was able to get to a prompt long enough to see an error loading the default font... Have been reading lots about Netscapes terrible fonts.. so I think that I ll make the changes there as well..
