Here's my current plan, and I welcome feedback. If anyone has any suggestions, please speak up.

I installed RH 7.2 on my extra computer this past week. I think it's ok, but the box is kind of limited because the hardware is so old. It only has 64MB and a Celeron 300a @450. What I'd like to do is install Win2k Pro so it can act as a gateway computer. I can then install RH 7.2 on my latest and greatest pc so I can get a real understanding, and be forced to play in Linux all the time.

My current system is:

AMD XP 1700+
256MB Mushkin PC2700 DDR333
Soltek SL-75DRV5
Asus 16x/40x ATA100 DVD
Maxtor D740X 40GB ATA133
GeForce2 GTS 32MB (Asus v7700)
Diamond MX300 (Aureal)

I'm guessing that my hardware will be supported, I'll verify that later if possible (before I make the plunge).

Question for all, what's your opinion? Do you think I'll get discouraged if I try the plunge method or is that really the best way to do it?

Sounds like a good plan to me :) I can guarantee you will get discouraged, but please don't give up. Just search for answers, ask questions, and in no time at all it'll all make sense. With RH 7.2 you probably won't have much problems though.

Dont see any prob with that setup but one thing, the using 2k as you gateway and not leaving RH (or another preferrable distro) on that 300 and make it a gateway.

Should have explained that, sorry.. I'm keeping 2kPro up because I feel more comfortable that I've not left a HUGE door open for attacks. With Linux, I have no clue if I've just broadcasted a HIT ME from root or not. I keep up with MS patches as part of my job and can pretty much lock a 2k box down so it's not doing anything for Internet users (abusers).

It's just a comfort thing.

You'll have to go to:
www.sourceforge.net/projects/aureal (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/aureal)

for soundcard drivers and to save you some pain I suggest you hit the CVS page and get that version because the drivers have been much improved since the 1.1.2 release over a year ago. There are detailed instructions on the page.

Good Luck.
