Hi,

I was just reading a previous post about someone wanting to know the difference between Redhat 8 and 9, and whether there's any point upgrading.

My question is, i was using Slack8 and kde and gnome run at a decent speed on my AMD K6-450, however on Slack9, they both run dead slow. Would i be as well going back to Slack8 and maybe just updating the kernel? Why do KDE and Gnome run slower in 9.0 than they do in 8.0.

Any advice would be appreciated...thanks in adance.

Cheers

I din't notice any difference in running the two on the same machine, but then again I am running twice what you are. The Slack kernel is optimized for Pentium 386 out of the box. You might try recompilng your kernel and optimizing it for AMD, but it might be a matter of gui in your case. It wouldn't hurt to try.

I just recompiled my kernel and KDE and Gnome seem to be running a little better. I changed the processor to K6 and disabled a few other things...actually that was my first attempt at recompiling the kernel and to my surprise it worked.

Thanks for the help..
