Hi@you all,
I want to install Linux Mandrake 8.0 on my machine with internet access.
Can you tell me if it will still be possible to communicate with my other computer, e.g transfer files between them (very important for me) or maybe even use a proxy on my internet machine to provide access to the internet for the other machine? How would I do this?
thanks for your help.
Generally yes. However it depends how do you want to share files.
If you have lan, where you want to share files with win machines you can use samba (can share printers also), with linuxes nfs. I haven't used nfs at all and only little samba, so don't know much from them.
If you want to just do once in a while, you can use ftp/sftp programs or even put your linux to act as servers for those. As server for for ftp, there should be some daemons with most distributions and with sftp server i suggest OpenSSH, which has ssh and sftp both in it.

To share files to PCs with windows installed, you can use SAMBA... I've already done it more than once, from a network of only two nodes up to one with 50+ nodes... The server I use is linux, while all the nodes are a mix of Windows98, WindowsNT, WindowsMe, and Windows2000 machines...
Now since you plan on using manrdake 8, it has this item in the mandrake control center that could automagically set up internet conncetion sharing for you... so there's no problem about that (unless you despise configuring linux using a GUI :) )...
i hope this helps... have a nice day! :D
