This is the first time I tried debian. The version is 3.0r1. To my big surprise:

1. kernel is 2.2.20-idepci

2. mozilla is 1.0

3. gnome is 1.4

???? :( :(

I was thinking of Debian myself but decided not to go with it since it has a lot of outdated packages and an old Kernel. Debian claims that it will only ship out products with packages and kernels that they considers stable. They feel that the 2.4.X Kernels are still not stable enough for them:rolleyes: . Who knows, all I knew was that I wanted something stable but that I had a relatively new PC, so if I went with an old kernel then I think I would have had a lot more hardware compatibility problems. I appreciate them wanting to put out stable stuff and working on their own schedule rahter than what the market dictates, but for my situation like I said, with a newer PC I new I would have had problems. I would defently like to try them on one of my older boxes since I have heard such good things about them.

You can however update to all the latest packages and kernel(will take some time) using their great apt-get upgrade/package mangement tool.

If youre interested in trying debian go for it. Install the OS and upgrade to sarge (testing) or sid (unstable). Its no big deal, but I think that's why debian has the appeal of many. Its easy to upgrade and very stable.

Agreed.
I'm currently messing around with Sid, and it seems alright for the most part (although i just know i'm gonna seriously mess something up soon :P).
And apt-get is absolutely incredible, especially when using Synaptic.

when stable is released it is basically frozen. no new packages are added and only security problems are fixed.
