I have been trying to install Linux on a drive that has one 20 GB NTFS partition with Windoze 2k and one empty 10 GB partition that is going to be the Linux file system. I am using Mandrake 7.2 distribution. When I get to the step that is "Checking file systems" the installation stalls and freezes every time. I tried formatting the 10 GB partition to FAT to see if that was the problem but it still freezes. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem when trying to install Linux on a drive with an NTFS partition. Thanks!

Just delete the partition - make it your ntfs partition and then the rest should be unpartitioned space.

When you are done installing, be sure to make a boot disk. Also, before you do anything with lilo, check out the various NT+Linux/Lilo docs at www.linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org) in the howto section.

I deleted the 10 GB partition and tried to install again but it still freezes at the same spot (setup filesystems). Anymore suggestions?

Thanks!
