alrighty.

I'm running Mandrake 9.1 with metacity and gtk

What I want to do is remove *ALL* desktop icons. I have tried deleting them from the desktop, from the "/.gnome-desktop" folder, and have even tried deleting the whole desktop folder - even as root. But as soon as I log back on to gnome everything is back - even if I select "save current session".

Is there a config file I have to hack to do this? I want NOTHING on my desktop.....NOTHING!!!

delete nautalis / disable it.

That will remove all desktop functions too

if i disable it, will i still be able to launch it once logged on? also does it disable desktop right click menus? I more Precisely want only to "hide" all desktop icons

me too! but im sort of fond of nautalius... and not of many of KDE's equivilants. i use the command line for most of it anyway, maybe i don't need nautalius? hrmph.

what i have done to get rid of those stupid little icons (without removing natualius, it seems to help with Eterm and transparent backgrounds, plus like i said i sorta enjoy nautaluis sometimes) is to iconize them to the smallest size possible, and hide them behind one of my toolbars. to hide them i would make the toolbar autohide, slip the icons behind, then remove the autohide setting. this works wonders if it is a floating corner toolbar on the bottom right, that you always want to see i.e: time/date/virtual terminals. cheers!

the Hide behind the toolbar" worked fine
