I need help to install netscape netscape 7.0, but dont know where to start this is my 1st time installing something in linux as i'm a linux newbe. I have downloaded the netscape installer file to my desktop and have un-packed it by right clicking it and selecting Extract here. I dont know where to go from here.
I have read various threads mentioning that various commands have to be typed in somwhere but where? what commands? and how do I log in as root?
thanks in advance
Samsom
Use the SuSE packaged version of netscape.
Open YaST2
Click on install new software
search for Netscape or Mozilla (they are fundamentally the same application, I prefer Mozilla).
Install
Play
??
Profit
Easy, problems just ask. As for the installer you downloaded there is always, always a file called README. Read it. It tells you what to do next. Look for a file called INSTALL also.
I suggest you use YaST2 however. It's a lot easier.
It is extremely bad manners to flood the forums. You have posted this request 3 times in three forums! You must stop it immediately.
You'll just encourage people to not help you.

Ok I've done what u have said, i.e. used YaST2 to install netscape communicator, but this is version 6 not version 7, Im getting there bit by bit.
I have located a read me file and this is what it says:
*Installation Instructions -- Unix
1. If you are installing from the CD:
- Change to the Linux directory on the CD:
cd linux. Then skip to step 3.
If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
- Download the
netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
archive.
2. Type one of the following to gunzip and
untar the archive:
tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
OR
gzip -dc netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz | tar xvf -
3. Change to the directory that contains the
Netscape installation files:
cd netscape-installer
4. Run the Netscape 7.0 Installer with the run
script:
./netscape-installer
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to
complete the installation process.
6. To start Netscape, change to the directory
where you installed it and run the program:
./netscape
The program starts automatically the first time.
28 January 2003
when i type ./netscape-installer into the run command pop up box i get the following error:
unknown host
any ideas what is causing this? and how do I proceed?
many thanks
samsom
that wasn't the full error message.
Use sux to change to root not su and then do netscape<TAB> (the tab key don't type it )
Also just use mozilla, it's a lot better anyway, netscape just has more bloat. YaST's mozilla has gorgeous anti-aliased fonts and is very pleasant to use.

Ok, now I've made a bit more progress, I've now got the netscape installer program up and running. But suprise suprise, guess what? I hit another stumbling block.
I now get following error when I click on yes in the installer menu (i.e. to try and install netscape 7 to the /usr/local/netscape directory)
Error[-624]: Can't make destination directory. Please try another directory
any ideas why I cant create this directory?

I have also tried the executing the command
mkdir /usr/local/netscape
but I get the following error
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/netscape': Permission denied
Anyone's help is very much appreciated

There must be something very simple that I'm missing here but I cant put my finger on it,
How do get permission to create this directory?
ideas anyone?
You should just use YaST2 to install Mozilla. Obviously this is too much too quickly for you.
You need to be root (use sux in a terminal window eg konsole), then do the mkdir.
Best of luck, but really just use Mozilla! Why are you so keen on Netscape?

I would hardly call posting a request 3 times flooding the forums, as for bad manners, how about insertion of:  as an example.

You only need to request once. As it happens I did not realise it was the same person asking the same question and took my time to answer your problem all three times! I wasted my time for no reason. I consider this bad manners. I expect an apology from you.
Are you gonna bark all day little doggie? You absolute dick, I went out of my way to help you in three seperate forums! You don't deserve anyone's help at all. Get out of here moron.
