I like kde but there are a few Gnome programs that I use so I install the basic gnome packages so I can run them under kde.

Currently: KDE, in the future: Gnome.

I agree, try both. i am a bit of a minimalist that still likes eye candy so I use gnome, and i have it stripped down a bit, basically all I have running in my enviroment is gnome-panel with an edge panel and all my icons, and sawfish for my wm. works well for me, but that is the beuty of linux, you arent stuck with just the standard options.

I started off liking KDE... these days, I use GNOME.

If you run through the desktop pics (under the top threads on the main page), you can see a lot of the differences between the two.

In the early days, I picked gnome because it was selected by default during the RH 5 install. When I decided to check out KDE, I switched and never looked back. I just prefer it, no real reasons.

Depends who's using it. For the family, KDE. It was more stable (still is?) back when I got started, and that's what they started out with. For myself, Gnome, both because I started using it with redhat back in 1998, and because I am a relentless tinkerer, and it allows me to really screw up my desktop at will. :D
