I installed RH 7.0 without hitch, but my video resolution is way to high leaving me with miniscule fonts and icons. I ran Xconfigurator and despite my changes my desktop remained at the same resolution after reboot. I went into the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and edited out all Modes in the "Display" subsection of "Screen", except "800x600" and "640X480". I did this for all the displays and at every depth. No change after reboot. So then I went back in and edited out all the mode lines in the Monitor section except those above. No change still. BTW Xconfigurator makes the appropriate changes in
/etc/X11/XF86Config.
Soo..I went looking for another XF86Config file and found it in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config. This file changes when I change the one in
/etc/X11/XF86Config with no effect on the screen.
Changing resolutions with ctrl & alt & + works but then the screen doesn't fit on the monitor and I have to scroll around my desktop and windows.
Using ideas from the XFree86 FAQ I added the line
Virtual 800 600
after the mode lines in the Display subsection of Screen, again no luck
I'm running Gnome using sawfish as the window manager. I have a voodoo3 3000 video card-agp 16bit with 128Mb.
Is is possible that sawfish or Gnome are using another file beside XF86Config for video settings?
I've gotten this far from a search on this BBS, but I've used all the suggestions I can find. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried editing XF86Config-4? I too use RH7 and that is the file that I have to edit.

yeah its weird....i couldnt change mine either. I just deleted my XF86Config file (it was bad anyway) and I ran XConfigurator to get the sync rates and crap in there, then I customized it

 Option "FastVRam"

Editing the XF86Config-4 file did the trick. I never saw this suggestion in any instruction or FAQs, but things work great. Now onto bigger and better things. Thanks for the help.

Yep.. that will depend on which verson of XFree86 you are running. I believe XF86 4.x.x uses XF86Config-4. The rest of the config files are probably from an earlier verson of XF86.
