Hi,
I am trying to figure out what would be a good baseline for a linux box that will be running squid for proxying and filtering, postfix and spamassassin for relaying and filtering mail, IPtables, and SNORT for IDS.

Right now we have a 1.2GB cpu, with 256MB, an IDE 70GB HDD, and 2 10/100 NICS. This is only being used for testing right now. But we would like to have a rackmount server with hardware that is good enough for future expansion.

So what would some of you recommend for the hardware on the services we are going to be running on this.

imho what you already have is good enough. you don't really specify the type of load it is going to have to handle (number of clients, etc) so ...

sorry about that. Well, there is no specific load. These boxes will be built for a number of clients that will range from 10 to over 250, maybe a bit more.

Ever thought of the Compaq Proliant series?
Whatever runs under Novell or Windows 2000 will even run better under LINUX.
Whiel I'm not a big fan of their desktops they build decent servers.
Another Idea would be IBM .... they mostlikely would be able to sell you a complete LINUX setup. And their service rocks (at least on the AS/400 side)

I'd just like to give another vote for IBM. They are pretty good.
