Hello All!

I have decided to go the gnome route as it "feels" faster than KDE...

The only problem is the I cannot get sound to work (it was working fine in KDE2)

Do I have to start the esound deamon at startup? If so, how? I can put it in a startup script, but don't know which options, etc to use.

BTW, my system (otherwise going smoothly) is:
Debian unstable
Ximian Gnome
PIII 450
esssolo1 sound card (compiled into the kernel)
kernel 2.4.1

Thanks in advance!

Sound is really unconnected to the desktop.

You don't have to have start ESD at start up.

Maybe the volume is just turned way down? use gnome-mixer-applet to change it.

Thanks for the reply...

I tried the mixer applet, the sound is at full volume (I can actually start to hear feedback!)...

What I am not getting is the "window manager" sounds (i.e. gnome startup, window open, etc...)

Any ideas?
