Does Debian(potato) support .rpm's? Someone in Yahoo chat told me it does, but I didn't quite believe them!

With alien, you can convert rpms to debs. So yes, it supports them in that manner.

I think it was Strike that said (correct me I'm wrong), that converting a rpm into a deb is like using a castrated deb. So it's always better to use a real deb than converting one.

There are no stupid questions, just a whole bunch of inquisitive idiots. ;) j/k

If you must install through a package manager, it's best to use the one your distribution officially supports. For Debian, it's unlikely that you won't find the package that you're looking for in deb. Ask around for what you're looking for and I"m sure some of the Debian users here will point you to the package.
