exactly what it sounds like.

debian userland ported to a bsd kernel. (i think they decided on netbsd 8)

BSD = Berkeley Software Distribution

Go read the history of UNIX on the Net -- there's like a million pages on SysV, BSD and Bell Labs. Why are you asking us when you could find it out for yourself really easily?

oh, and it's Debian GNU/BSD :)

That's part of what makes it unique. Not only will it be using the Debian tools, but also the GNU tools. It's basically just like Debian GNU/Linux but with the BSD kernel and the BSD directory structure (I think they might even still stick with SysV init for it, but I'm not sure)
