Use the package system on SuSe-> YaST. It has a Mozilla package which is open source netscape and a netscape package. That way the dependencies will be configured and the necessary links will be made. I would recommend the Mozilla package since it is updated more frequently than the netscape package.

When you install programs in linux, always, always try to do it with YaST first.

It'll make life many times easier.

by the way, I needed to start somewhere so I'd thought that I'd install some downloaded software

Go to the SuSE site and read up on using Yast. Go to 'www.mozilla.org" site and read on using Mozilla.

YaST has a built in software management system like Windows does, except YaST can install SuSE branded packages for almost all the software you'd want to use.

Don't download install programs from the internet, first see if YaST can do that for you.

Click the install/remove software button in YaST.

Trust me, as a newbie I wished I'd stuck with YaST until more profocient with *nix.

Blimey, it's not difficult!

Open YaST2 (KDE Menu or type YaST2 into a console, or press ALT-F2 and type YaST2 or click the YaST2 icon on the panel)
Click on install new software
Search for Mozilla or Netscape
Install one of them!

Mozilla is Netscape. Netsape is Mozilla. The differences are slight.

That's because it's YaST2 not Yast2. Linux is case-sensitive.

I gave you plenty of options to get YaST2 opened, the easiet by far was the K-Menu, use that and open a Konsole or console or terminal. It should be called Konsole. Or push ALT-F2 and type konsole into the prompt.

YaST2 is featured very clearly in the K-Menu AND on the desktop (I think).

I still get the same error even when I type YaST2

That's because it's konsole not Konsole!

Most things in linux are all lowercase but once in a while people are very annoying and use mixed case.

Look YaST2 will be featured in the K-Menu someplace, just look for it. It should also be on the panel and on the desktop. The panel it the bar along the bottom of the screen.
