Okay, as a long time ManDrake user, I am getting fed up with current ManDrake, and RedHat (which I've been trying out).

Does SuSe support the following (and I mean support, out of the box, from the CD):

Promise UDMA cards (NOT promise chips on the MBO, but add on cards), with more than 2 drives?

USB printers - Specifically an HP952C?

ManDrake (8.1) and RedHat 7.2 (Roswell) have me back to entering the Promise drive parameters at boot, and it's not working well. ManDrake Freq #'s 1&2 (via CUPS) has no problem with the HP952C USB printer, but RedHat needs drivers (on SourceForge) which are totally flaky once installed (again, I'm talking out of the box, expert install mode).

Basically, yes, I want a bleeding edge distro, with the new KDE (mainly for the new Koffice), but also sound legacy support for the Promise card (and I do honestly consider this kind of thing as "legacy" support, by this time).

If SuSe 7.2 offers these kind of things, then I am more than willing to pay for 7.3 shortly, or just plow ahead and buy 7.2.

Any insights from current users of SuSe is appreciated. Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, I think this is one of the kernel options with 2.4.x You may just need to recompile your kernel with the option enabled. I'm just shooting in the dark here though. 8.1 is about as bleeding edge as it gets right now.

i'm pretty sure that suse 7.2 does support the promise ata controller, but not in any sort of raid mode -- but i'm pretty sure also that the drivers are 'immature'

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like SuSe claims the ULTRA100 card is fully supported, but the 66 cards "may be problematic". Guess I'll just have to try it and see (or get a UDMA100 card ?).

subnet_rx - the reason I'm annoyed at 'Drake and RedHat, is they have had perfect support for my controller/drives in past releases ('Drake as long ago as 6.5), but their current releases get it all horribly wrong. Even when I pass the kernel inits so I can at least install and boot, things are very flaky ('Drake 8.1 especially). I like bleeding edge, but I hate when something that was "fixed" before gets repeatedly broken again.
