Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : no output gain in my volume control software... sound card help

For some reason, my volume control software (aumix, gnome-volume-control, etc) don't have 'output gain' (sometimes listed as 'ogain') in my Mandrake 9.1 system. It was present when I installed Red Hat 9 just a few weeks ago (identical system, nothing changed). I really need this for my speakers to work. I checked gnome-volume-control and it is the latest version.

Does anyone know why output gain will be missing from the volume control in one distribution and not the other? Is there a way to get it back? Was this feature (i.e. output gain) taken out in the new versions of volume control? Or is the OS not detecting some capability of the sound card and not making it available.

I'm using a Soundblaster Live! sound card. It works perfectly (in Windows).

Thanks!

I'm not sure if I had similar problem with my Mandrake, but when I installed it, I couldnt hear anything, althoug sound server seemed to be installed properly.

After some time, I tried to use Gnome sound volume control instead of KDE one and I found out that my sound level slidebar was all the way down. I pumped it up and voila - let it be sound. My point is, try different sound level control apps that came with linux, maybe one of them will have the thing you search.

are you running an emu10k1 based card such as Soublaster Live! or Audigy?

sorry about before: i missed you putting the card's name in your first post.

yeah, this is the second or third time i've seen problems w/ emu10k1 cards within 2 weeks. I don't know if it's specific to Drake distros or what, but I haven't been able to isolate the root of the issues quite yet. Are you able to adjust the volume with any of the other controls? Are your speakers digital?

Or try this *seemingly* easy fix:
1. open aumix.
2. click the "view" drop down menu
3. select "OGain" then release the mouse button

wha-la!

I think I tried that before: 'ogain' isn't one of the listed choices :( Every other option is enabled and shows up.

I guess my question is this... what dictates the options that show up in the volume control? Is that dependent on hardware detection? Do the options show up based on hardware capabilities? I'm just confused regarding the volume controls. The 'ogain' was available in Red Hat 9 but is missing in Mandrake 9.1--why???

see this post:

to summarize, you need to install alsamixergui and alsa-utils, then open alsamixergui, lock "analog output" and raise the volume for wave surround.

I don't know if this will fix your problem, but I have a SB Live on Mdk 9.0 and after this fix, I had sound out of all my speakers.
