i have a rockwell 56k modem, i have finally got linux to find and recognize it, set up the internet account. the modem dials but then drops out saying no carrier. does this mean that i need a differnt init string or something else all together,

thanks

What distro are you using?

Read the modem's manual to find the correct init string for your particular conditions.
Also, check all simple overlooked details too. Is the modem actually connected to a live line? Can you use the line with a normal phone?

I hate working on a problem for hours/days only to discover it was a simple overlook on my case :)

i think that i have checked all the modem simple things. linux knows that the modem is there and uses it to dial out to my isp, you can hear the modems talking to each other, then when you would normally get (on win98) verithying username and password, i get no carrier.

i am using linux red hat 7.0
thanks

No solution,
but I have a similar situation:
I can dial in fine with my Windows Partition.
when I dial in with my linux it says it connects but I get no movement.
I'm using Red Hat 6.2 with a Lucent Actiontec 56K V.90 & k56flex modem.
I use the exact same setup in windows but when I ping gatekeeper.dec.com in linux it says host not found or something along those lines.
