after some serious issues with the installation of XFree86 4.0.2 with a wonky Xinstall script that was supplied, i realized alot of the problems i had with the install had to do with the lack of a /var/state directory.
This is a fresh install of Mandrake 7.2, and didn't have a /var/state
so, quick poll:
what distro are you running, and whats under your /var/ tree?

ah HA i am not alone then, nobody else seemed to be having these script problems with xfree86, but from the look of it, anyone running mandrake 7.2 is going to be in trouble.
Thanx!
looking into the Xinstall script now, makin a couple draketweaks.

You know they have Mandrake-specific rpm packages for that, right? ;)

I've got Drake 7.2 on my home system (w/o the /var/state directory) and I had no problems installing XFree86 4.0.2 with the Xinstall script. Even got 3d going with my Geforce2 MX card.
Just thought I'd let you know that not all Drake 7.2 users have had a problem installing XFree86 4.0.2.
