I am thinking of putting it on a 2GB HD, will this be big enough for it to fit comfortably?, also I tried mandrake 8.0, and found it did not list a exact match for my graphic card (gforce2mx)only gforce 1 and gforce2 ddr, during install. Hence it did not work properly.
Will 8.1 list it, do you think?
Thanks very much.

Yes, 8.1 should fix the compatability problem with your graphics card.
As for the size of your hard drive, it depends on how much you want to do with Mandrake. I would recommend at least 5 GB, but, that's just my personal recommendation. If you only install KDE or Gnome (not both) and you don't install every web browser, etc, that comes with Mandrake, you should easily fit on a 2 GB partition.

I personally fit Darke 8.1 on a 3 gig HD, and that's with EVERYTHING i could find on the cd.
Just take out either Gnome or KDe, and you should be fine.

You should install the drivers from nvidia after you install mandrake be it 8.0 or 8.1 anyways.
The nv driver that comes with mandrake 8.0 will run anything from a riva128 to a geforce 2 ultra, so it would of supported your mx just fine.

you can fit all you want on 3gb just, but you wont have any space left for anything else such as accounts, web server space, ftp etc.
i have 5gb to be sure.
install all i want and think would need, remove the gunk that i dont and have the rest to play with
most impressed with the games, i installed the rpm for the nvidia glx and the source for the kernel, which was suggested somewhere else here, and bang there it was flying, but im still crap at tuxracer though!
the only gripe i have is the mandrakeupdate tool eject my 2nd cdrom not my first, i have to use shell to eject it so i can swap disks for installing.

If still not sure if I'll get better results if I use 8.1, my 8.0 was burned from another copy, I had to use gforce2 ddr as the nearest match, although it worked, it didn't test properly, and I could not shutdown the system.Does 8.1 list an exact match?
I have used gentus 3.0, but I could not use my GF2mx because it had the old version of X.
I used an old ati card, which worked perfectly.

It's funny you should say this because I thought my 2nd disk was faulty. Although mine wasn't a uprade.

don't choose the DDR, that overclocks the memory, and I wouldn't doubt if it completely locked X on further use. Choose the plain GF 2 or even GF 1. The mx has even lower memory speeds than the GF 2, but it should be safe.

fraid' the gforce1 does the same thing, the only gforce2 option is the ddr one.
I presume 8.1 should list more of a variety of nvidia cards, after all there are dozens of ati cards to choose from in 8.0
