Funny Creature Appears...Have I been hacked?

I have this curious little yellow smiley face that likes to go in most things I click now, like in my StarOffice reinstall attempt a minute ago, and my shutdown menu, and I never noticed him before. He also drops down from the top of the screen, sometimes. He's only started showing up since I installed StarOffice 6.0 beta, but he's not anything I would put in a program.

Have I been hacked?

I also installed Mozilla, but like I said, he looks a little too spooky to be in any program. Whenever I hit enter in the reply screen and the little security box comes up, the smiley sits right on top of the box. ...really weird.

Type ps aux | less and see if you can find something weird there.

Could you paste it here? All processes are listed when you run ps, even that weird thing on your screen. Also, let us know what services you usually run.
