Just wanted to check in with all you knowledgable Linux fiends.
I'm running RH 7 with the 2.2.17 kernel. I've been told that this is a "buggy" release, and I've seen some strange stuff, but it's been nothing major.
Now, I'm interested in going to the 2.4 kernel, but RH's site says that its not yet available in a stable, tested form. Should I go ahead with it anyway? Do most of you think that the current 2.4 kernel is pretty stable at this point?
I've never done a kernel compile, so this will be a first for me, for whatever that's worth.
Thanks everyone. Curious to know what most of you think about the stability of the 7.0 release.

I think any kernel on a RH7 system won't be top quality. They had to do a little dancing to even get it to work (that is, include a whole other compiler).
As for 2.4.2, haven't had any problems with it yet. Anything that went wrong was my own dumb fault and was fixed just by trying again (Huh? You mean I can't compile that as module? Oops).

Do you mean that the RH7 release is not great in general, or the whole RH distro?

Red Hat 7 did have some problems when it was released. If you install the updates from the Red Hat site, you'll be just fine.
Also, they just released the second beta of version 7.1. It's been running very, very nice for me. They've updated the installer, as well, with some very nice features.
A lot of folks on this board are very down on Red Hat. I do understand some of the complaints but not all of them. You'll NEVER find a distro that is completely bug free (I don't care what anyone says). I'm running Debian 2.2r2 on my other box and it had some bugs, as well.
Just keep up with the updates and you'll be fine.

I am using RH 7.
Get ALL the latest updates with the
up2date
program.
I have never had my box so unstable before the updates.
Also I have never had my box so STABLE WITH the upgrades on kernel 2.2.18 it feels very stable, rock solid so far.
And with KDE 2.1 with QT 2.3 AntiAliased fonts, hmmm primo !

I'm sure it runs fine for everyone (I should know, I run it on my primary, that's going to change soon though) but I don't like ugly hacks. Ye Olde egcs is the ugliest of the ugly that Red Hat threw in.

I installed Red Hat 7 and did all the updates. I haven't encountered any bugs (except the major bug that occurs when you try using a usb mouse). I uncomressed the 2.4.0 source code and compiled it with USB support and all, and now everything works great. I must say that after updating everything and upgrading the kernel, RH 7 seems quite stable for me. I have even started running a CS Server from it.
