Mandrake 8.1 - Root password only works sometimes...

This is driving me crazy, for some reason
if I try to log in as root I have to keep trying like 15 times before it finally accepts my login.

Same thing happens if I am in my user account and try to do something that requires the root password. (Like installing an RPM) I have to type my password over and over and over untill it finally takes it.

Does anyone have any clue whats going on? I can't figure it out. My user account's password works every time.

change it to something very simple, then try it again. I have never heard of this problem.

it is very simple its a 7 letter word thats all lower case.

But I'll try to change it anyway, but I dont' know how.

I would try Mandrake control center. I'm just guessing though, I use RH 7.1
