ok i have a RH8 samba server and a win xp box on a local lan sharing a broadband connection thru a applebase station. i also havean osx mac on the lan.

the osx can see the samba shares on the linux box, the linux box can see all teh other windows share son the lan on both the win xp and osx box and itself using LinNeighborhood.

the apple air base staion is running nat and dchp (and i think dns?!) .

the win box refuses to see the other machine in its network neighborhood.. only itself..

any ideas?

I think the first thing I'd check is to be sure the WinXP box is running NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Depending on how and where the XP machine was set up, it may not be. It will need it to be able to communicate with the Samba server.

On the TCP/IP properties page on the XP machine, click on the Advanced button, then the WINS tab. Make sure the radio button is selected that says Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

make sure you have the default Win XP firewall turned off. get into the windows explorer thing, and make sure you're sharing files/folders to the rest of the network.

ye sits running netbios now and it can be seen by the other on the lan so it is sharing files iself however in the owrkgroup window on the xp machine it can only see itself not the other shares.

you might want to make sure everything is ok with the Applebase as well, making sure that the NAT is turned on, etc etc.

I have XP on both machines, I made first off for sure that they could both see each other. Are you using XP pro, or home edition? If you're using Pro edition, make sure you have the proper kernel installed so that RH can first of all even recognize the machines. http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html here's the link for a pre-compiled kernel for RH 8 that will allow you to access the NTFS partitions. Once that's installed it should work

please read the problem description carefully.

everything is fine with nat and applebase and os x box and linux box. they can see everything and each other including the xp box on the lan. the xp box only sees itself.

it is xp home edition.

i am using dchp on all the boxs for net work addressing.
