As a horrible newbie I have had a bit of trouble properly setting my box up w- its new cable modem. I'm running a stand alone box w-'drake 8.1 on p3 450 w- 96 ram.

As I start gnome I get an error saying of "Cannot find internet address for <hostname>" Any idea how I can resolve this? I've tried editing my network config, but I've not solved the problem... Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

open up /etc/hosts and make sure that your computers hostname sits next to the ip address 127.0.0.1.

If this doesnt work, post your /etc/hosts.allow, /etc/hosts.deny, and /etc/hosts files here

BTW, the term hostname confuses some newbies. Hostname is actually the name of your computer. I know, i know . . . you will get used to it ;)

whats your machine name, if you've given it a fqdn then it will look for a dns entry i think

set it to something like

billy
instead of

billy.msn.com

not saying to use the msn.com but it explains my suggestion

Thanks, folks! I'll give it a shot as soon as I get back home.

i got the same message when intalling mandrake 8.0...i configured my internet connection in the mandrake control center and also ran netconf and changed some settings settings to work with my isp. my cable company gave me a sheet with all the setting they used (such as ip addresses etc) when then configured my new cable modem for windows...

don't know if this helps, but good luck...
