I am trying to install x3270 on RH9. I dowloaded the rpm, I log on as root, right click on the rpm, tab to open, then install.
I get the window that says checking module dependencies, etc, then all of the sudden, nothing, zilch, nada, the window goes away, and it goes back to regular gnome. I have, in the last week, had more urges to simply smash this dam machine than in thirty years of pro-dp'ing put together. Any hints? I can't find a log, can't find it generated any module, nuthin.

Are you doing this as root? Maybe you should use a terminal and rpm -ivh <name>.rpm and see what the output is.
And... what is pro-dp'ing

TY. Will give it a shot.

Pro-dp'ing is getting paid to work on Univacs and IBM's. Mostly IBMs.

It came back and said "Preparing... then a bunch of #signs, followed by 100%, then another line that says 1:x3270, more pound signs and another 100%

might as well be Chinese or something I don't have a clue what I just did.

OK, it did install it, it put it into usr/bin/x11/bin so now I will test it.

This stuff is starting to make a bit of sense...

Thats a scary thought!!

I am going to suggest that you should go down to your favorite bookstore and pick up a good linux book. Don't jump into a new OS cold, get to know the command line, and DO NOT RELY ON GUI TOOLS yet. many of the gui tools are distro specific.
