linux? What? (can ya' help me out?)

I'm a student in a BST class, and we've just been given a technical term to go and research on the web. I was the lucky lady to get "linux." After spending more time than I should have, all I've found are technical descriptions that just confuse me more, can anyone give me a layman explanation of what exactly Linux is? o_o *whine*

well there is so much info on linux on the net, just do a google search on "linux history," but here is a site that has a basic non-tech statement of what Linux is http://www.li.org/index.php
