640x480 problem

hi. i'm having problems getting in 640x480 resolution. it might be because my moniter doesn't support 640x480. i'm wondering can this be a problem w/ my Linux Box? i have 640x480 in my /etc/X11/XF86Config, is that the only place where this problem might be?
