well after a possible hack last week that was a pain in the as* i have reinstalled and i am setting up my security settings before i connect to the internet this time...
problem is that when i try to change the security setting using in the control setting the left panel (where the change is made) turns gray and the mouse pointer turns into a watch and stays like this for 20 minutes plus... i finally gave up and after reopening the security window i seems to be unchanged...
is it supposed to take more than 20 minutes?
its not like i have a slow computer??
how do i raise the security level, is there another way to change it??
thanks

what security level are you talking about? The firewall settings?

I've seen other posts here about the exact same 'problem', and it seems like there is a bug in the tool which makes it display "open-for-hackers" even if you decided on High security at installation time.
On the other hand, I'm not sure if the different levels of security in Mandrake only dictates which services are set up and running at bootup. You could probably get the same result as 'High Security' by just shutting down all the services you don't need; like httpd, ftp, telnet, rlogin, etc.
Cheers :)

subnet_rx: in the mandrake control center under security you are given the following options:
"cracker welcom"
"low"
"medium"
"high"
"paranoid"
however when i try to choose one of these options i get the problem i described above...
i have setup my firewall which was easy enough but i was wondering if there was a way to test it??

it's a bug, run mandrake software manager, point it to a security update source and maybe there will be updates that fixes this problem. I don't know if there, this would be logical though.

just run a software firewall like Firestarter. You can halt, let everything though, or assume normal operation on the fly. It works a lot like Zonealarm on Windows. and it's very user friendly.
