ok, i've called myself searching for this but the stuff i find i can't seem to figure out... basically, i want to know if "trusting" my eth0 device is a good idea in my firewall config? it seems to be the only way i can get samba to work right, otherwise, my machines are hidden from one another by the linux machine (running red hat 9 by the way). any help would be appreciated... i'm very new and feeling kind of stupid right now:) Thanks!

Normally it is OK in a local network. But if the other computer on eth0 has a modem and can access the internet?

both computers connect to the internet through a 5-port router that is connected to a dsl modem...

I would say no, unless the router has a firewall you trust. Or the other computer has a good security setup. Because the attack could come through the other computer via the router via the modem.
