Anybody got any ideas on what is the bare minimum I need to install to make a simple SAMBA file server -- files to be shared with 4 windoze XP machines and 2 printers to be shared as well.
I would also like to have a GUI on the server -- KDE would be my choice. Windoze machines will be attached to network via fixed ethernet cable (Linksys NIC's in them) and a laptop via wireless card)also Linksys).
Internet access -- no problem as they all go through ADSL router.
I'm not expecting to do any kernel compiling, need any apps or whatever other than simple tools -- backup, shutdown, maybe internet -- but I would like to share the CD/DVD writers (3) with the windoze machines.
Choice I think for me is between redhat and Mandrake but I don't need to install all the packages.
Help please as I'm not sure what is essential to load and start the system.
Thanks.
