Yeah, I know I'm asking a lot of questions here. Now, I found a file describing what daemons are, and a general file describing how each one helps a system. So, I'm looking at the daemons that run when Mandrake starts up. Some I know are very important. Others...mmm...I'm wondering if I really need them. So, I thought I'd get some opinions about some of them. Here goes:

anacron, atd, crond - Any of these important? I *kind of* have a description of what they do, but, I'm not sure if they are really that important to my system.

harddrake - All I know about this, is it takes the longest time to boot during startup. What is it? Do I need it? (I'm thinking it's some kind of hardware detection thing, but haven't been able to figure it out...maybe similar to kudzu?)

Okay...well...those are the ones I had the most problem with. Any help on any of them would be great. Thanks.

In general, if you don't know what it is, you don't need it. If you turn something off and you break it, you can turn it back on.

cron is pretty essential to the system. anacron is not essential, but it makes sure your cron jobs get run even if the machine was off when they were supposed to run. atd shouldn't be used by anything on the system, so if you don't plan on using it, you can turn it off.

adequacy.org slated mandrake and slated linux in general

windows "gurus" were on there with mcse's saying that they knew what sysadmins were as they were mcse certified

it was interesting reading i must say ;)
