cant seem to get linux mandrake to install.
this is what happens. first i dled the iso version of 7.2 and burned it on a cd. next i reboot my pc and then i try to install linux. everything goes fine until it comes to a place that says initializing cd-rom and on the bottom left it says seond stage install. after that it just freezes.

Does it give you any error messages? If it gives error messages then we might be able to get somewhere. It may be a problem with your video card or mouse as well. As I recall, second stage install is where the GUI starts up. Take a look at the hardware section of mandrake's site and make sure that your vid card is listed as compatible. If it is, then boot up the installation media, and instead of selecting the normal install, see if there's a text-based one. It's not as pretty and it's a little more intimidating, but it'll get the job done just fine.

its a common install prob with mandrake.
what worked for me, and my old motherboard running a celeron 566 was to hit F1 at boot,
and type
linux no-hlt
this will be a solution if you can't install win2k/nt or if software cpu coolers hang your machine.
don't know if this is an intel processor bug, or motherboard prob

Did you create the cd's from the image? Or did you burn the iso's right to the CD?

My advice would be to create the cd's from the image, rather than having an actual ISO on the CD. Rumour has it that it works with a big ISO on your CD, but I've never gotten it to go for me. Your CD should have a directory structure, including the directories Mandrake/, Mandrake/RPMS, and a whole lotta others. The second CD should be mostly/all RPMS in a directory called either RPMS or RPMS2 (I forget which :)). Red Hat is very similar to Mandrake, and has a few less problems, but it's also a little bit less user-friendly. It's what Mandrake was taken from, so it's like a grown-up mandrake.

k im gonna try what that command godspiral. if that doesn't work i will have to do what the others say. well i dled it from iso cuz i just wanted a big file and not hassle over dling all those folders and stuff. ya my cd has all that rpms stuff but i dont know how to run it either. and another thing, i truly think my pc is worthless. it won't even install redhat. it just freezes like mandrake but this time it stops at
sbin/loader or something. i hate my pc.

Dude, I had the same thing happen with `Drake 7.2 on my Compaq. But `Drake 7.1 would install just fine! Keep at it, it will install eventually. It only took me a month! SuSE went on right first install!

ok the
linux no-hlt didn't work.
this sux my pc is also a compaq. let this be a lesson to all newbies out there. don't ever get a compaq, ive learned my lesson. ne ways, my pc is still being stubborn and it won't read the cd after saying inititializing cd-rom in mandrake 7.2 and sbin/loader in redhat 7.0.
