GnomeProject 05-07-2003, 11:50 PM Why is that my PII 366 seems to run linux faster than my xp 1800+ desktop system??? endoalpha 05-08-2003, 12:02 AM It just seems that way... What runs "faster"? check your startup daemons, (like samba, sshd, apache, stuff like that)... Also, post differences in the xfree resolution and depth. GnomeProject 05-08-2003, 12:09 AM Well for one, both are dekstop installs of RH 8.0 even though my info might suggest differently, and both have the same number of daemons running. The laptop has less memory and a much slower processor. The things that run slower are program loading (almost anything and everything) and window tiling...I get black lines when the window minimizes to the taskbar on the athlon desktop and don't on the laptop. Of course oO runs slowly on both when it starts up as it does on everything. Do I need to recompile my kernel and optimize it for an athlon XP 1800+ and if so, how would I go about doing this??? Thanks in advance! -Gnome endoalpha 05-08-2003, 12:24 AM What is the chipset on that ecs mainboard... I suspect your hard drives are in PIO mode (not using DMA). use hdparm for info on drive i suspect xfree might be setup using some kind of vesafb or some non accelerated driver. GnomeProject 05-08-2003, 12:34 AM awesome...i'll try that command after I reboot and will PM you (if that's ok?) when I can check it... thanks again. -Gnome justlinux.com
