i've been having mouse problems... someone suggested I
"make sure GPM (console mouse driver) is not active as it is known to interfere with the Xwindows driver"

could someone tell me how to disable GPM?

If you have Mandrake, go to DrakConf and click on startup services. From there, uncheck the box next to gpm.
