Most people who use their computer for solitaire, email, internet, and typing would be better off using linux. It costs less and Red Hat makes it easier than windows. You might argue that Linux/GNU doest come bundled with most desktops, but some companys do bundle linux with desktops. A lot of people buy 3.0 ghz p4s for checking their email and playing solitaire. Linux cuts costs and, when bundled with desktops, works right out of the box. RH9 is easier than XP for me at least. My hardware is more compatible with Linux. Some devices dont work but the things that do, work better. COMPUTER IGNORANT PEOPLE ARE EXTREMELY LIKELY TO ACCIDENTLY INSTALL SPYWARE IN WINDOWS BECAUSE OF Active-X or viruses or "free" sofware.

According to an interview with either the CEO or president of Redhat, people should use Windows on the desktop!!! Thats almost a quote from the guy making money on selling Redhat. He also said something to the effect of if his grandfather needed a new desktop, he would give him Windows.
Thats like Mr. Ford telling people Chevy's, but thats what he said.

thats cause redhat figures they make money selling Redhat software to businesses and if a business sees the OS is sold to a home user they think it sux and it isnt made for a business.
My theory. thats all.

I noticed the starter guy was banned, so I looked for his last post, and as I expected, it was in a management criticism thread. Sad, since from the day I first visited this site I've had the impression that I've met the one and the only (linux related) message board thats free from the kind of bs.

I think this guy is talking sense!
For one the majourity of people I know ARE doing the things this guy is saying -- windows for solitare, email and just reading stuff off the web.
I mean, linux would be even more useful for them as there would be no more Windoze 3 Rs -- reboot, reinstall, reformat
Less viruses will be on the net, and virus penetration will be less, not to say M$'s power will be less than today...
I know of people not knowing the difference between linux's and windows' user interface while they are using their computers! That means they don't know they are not using windows!
BTW, I had tries installing linux on old computers in my school's library that have corrupted windows and the computer technician does not want to repair as they were to be condemned. While I maximised the use of resources in the library, many people kept wondering why the "windows" system here is so different from their own....

I remember some of the moderators receiving very nasty PM's (including myself) from that particular member and hence the reason for banning. I would advise you not to base your impressions of JL just on what you read in those threads.

i would disagree with the idea that linux is better for the average desktop user because of better virus protection. the main reason that viruses aren't a problem in linux is because so few people use it. if everyone switched to linux then the virus problem would probably be just as bad. however i do agree that linux probably is better for the average user.
just my two cents.

...whens the last time your day-to-day user was able to start up a mail daemon?
...whats that? you run as root? tsk tsk....
:)
I'm actually planning on trying to set up a linux-based locked down workstation for my aunt and uncle this summer... they have gotten to the point they are afriad of the computer because everytime they get on it, I have to go over to their house and uninstall the latest email worm, etc...
So I'll know if this little theory works out or not :)

I got my mom into using Linux very easily. Some ppl keep going on about how ppl can't move over because they would have to learn how to do everything again yap yap yap. I just installed RH and made her a nice desktop with icons to the apps she uses and that was perty much it. She even likes Linux better these days 'cause she doesn't have to worry about viruses and the games are nicer in RH. Only thing that she had to learn was using OO.o which took her about an hour in total, but that is the time you'd have to spend learning any new picece of software so...
The point is that before she didn't know jack about Windows, but now she just doesn't know jack about Linux. And who sayd average user can't move over to using Linux anyway.

My Mom loves the Knoppix CD I gave her. Mostly she plays Frozen Bubble, but thats okay. She'd love to be running Mandrake, but she's addicted to AOL.
I did install GIMP, Mozilla, and OpenOffice.org on Windows for her. A little open source can go a long way...

What I based my impressions on was the fact that he was banned right after his (last) post in which he called you annoying, etc. And also, the below quote from one of your mods (again, next to that particular post) :
This is likely moot since you went out of your way to publicly insult a moderator and get yourself banned

Right. Because if Linux becomes more prevalent, people won't start writing more virii for it.....

There are people writing virii for Linux. But those virii are so specific to one setup, and Linux is so diverse, that they can never spread outside whichever lab they were invented in.

Especially read the comments for entry number 5.

I think, anyway.
And I would love it if I didn't have to support WinME on my grandma's machine. Just the other day, she managed to turn off her quick-launch bar, and couldn't figure out where anything was anymore. Now in Linux, I could have set the permission on whatever the equivalent directory is, so that she didn't have permission to turn it off, but not on ME.
She'd also like some better versions of Solitaire, which would be pretty simple. All she does is read e-mail and play the card games.
